Professor Masayuki Uemura (Research Advisor, Center for Game Research, Ritsumeikan University), who had made significant contributions to DiGRA Japan, passed away on December 6, 2021.

Professor Uemura played a vital role in the formation and development of the digital game industry as a developer of Nintendo’s Family Computer and Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). He was also one of the first people from the game industry to expand his activities to academics to promote game-related research and education. At present, many of the college graduates who had him as a research advisor are active in the game and content industries, while others became academics in-game research-related fields at higher education institutions.

Professor Uemura has been actively involved in presenting his research at our conference, and in 2013, he received the DiGRA Japan Award. In addition, he played a leading role in the international conference “Replaying Japan,” which is also co-hosted by us, and made a significant contribution to game research in the world as a whole.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to  Professor Uemura for his thoughtful guidance to our association and extend our heartfelt condolences.
